The Automation Process Engineer is responsible for all process automation for various injection molding machines and processes.  This includes all process automation development, transition automation and process improvement.


Process Automation Development

·        Defines requirements for manufacturing process automation and develops specifications for automation hardware, operating procedures, acceptance and validation test plans and protocols.

·        Designs, develops, upgrades, troubleshoots, and debugs automated processes, process hardware, mechanical and hardware components and sub-systems.

·        Investigates new technologies and determines feasibility for use and application.

·        Responsible for design of manufacturability assessments for new product launches and process technology assessments and for design, development, and maintenance of pilot production and scale-up facilities to support new product launches.

·        Leads vendor and technology selection processes for automation development activities and continually evaluates competitive products, processes, and/or new trends.

·        Provides technical and cross-functional team leadership as required by manager.

·        Plans projects and tracks schedules for complex projects and new product/process launches.

·        Manages capital approvals and budget up to $10mm annually.

·        Coordinates development activities with R&D, product & technology development, quality, manufacturing, packaging, and automated assembly requirements.

·        May function as core team member and extended team member for Operations and Process Development for new product/process launches.

·        Specifies equipment, tooling and fixtures for new processes and process changes.

·        Manages projects from concept phase through completion as directed by manager.

·        Coordinates assigned projects and communicates status reports with the appropriate technical and cross-functional team members.

·        Designs and executes experiments using DOE methodologies and analyzes test results using statistical tools.

Transition of Plastic Pipe Fittings Assembly Process from Development to Manufacturing

·        Works with Design and Manufacturing teams to develop, evaluate, and optimize cost-effective manufacturing strategies for all elements of plastic fitting design, mold design, and fitting assembly.

·        Works with Quality Engineering to ensure all appropriate validations are completed in accordance with regulatory requirements.

·        Performs material process capability, scalability, tooling, and cost analyses.

·        Reviews potential process feasibility, risk assessments and requirements, and identifies new/existing processes.

·        Reviews assembly process and performs DFMA analysis.

·        Defines requirements and implements unique manufacturing processes, including integration with molding, forming, electronics, fluidics subassemblies, and automation as necessary.

·        Investigates new technologies and determines feasibility for use and application.

·        Responsible for design for manufacturability assessments, new product launches, and process technology assessments.

·        Specifies equipment, tooling, and fixtures for new processes and process changes.

Optimization of and Maintenance of Plastic Pipe Fittings Assembly Process

·        Works with the Validation team to ensure timely validation of the automated manufacturing processes.

·        Directs and coordinates the assembly operations through preferred vendor(s) who exercises full responsibility for results in terms of costs, methods and associates.

·        Develops project timelines, manpower requirements, and project plans to support the implementation of full scale assembly processes of irrigation fittings program.

·        Participates in formulation of and implementation of policies and procedures.

·        Develops and monitors budgets for capital expenditures, operating expenses, and resources as they pertain to manufacturing assembly processes.

·        Performs other related duties and assignments as required


·        Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering or related discipline is required.

·        Minimum of 5 years relevant experience, and outstanding knowledge in the fields of automation engineering and process automation.

·        Demonstrated ability to promote teamwork and motivate and manage exempt level personnel.

·        Experience in the specification and design of automated manufacturing equipment for use within a regulated industry.

·        Experience in the specification and process design for new products within a regulated industry.

·        Previous experience writing equipment specifications, operating procedures, and managing design efforts of equipment vendors.

·        Experience developing and executing acceptance test and validation testing protocols required.

·        Capable of working under minimal supervision and directing activities of technical and other associates as necessary.

·        Effective financial management, organization and planning skills.

·        Computer skills in Microsoft Office, Project, Visio, Minitab, and QDMS.

·        Project planning and tracking for complex projects and new product/process launches.

·        Experience with 'First of Type' automation, from pilot line design to full production scale-up.

·        New Product and Process Development experience required.

·        Experience in development and troubleshooting of machine and process operations for high-speed complex automation, including packaging.

·        Experience managing large capital budgets and complex project timelines across multifunctional disciplines.

·        Strong & effective interpersonal skills with the ability to develop others.

·        Must be a self-starter and must be effective with minimal supervision and capable of influencing critical decisions with minimal authority.

·        Must have meaningful experience with and strong capability to work well in a team based environment.

·        Must be highly motivated with good organizational and analytical/technical problem solving skills.

·        Proficient in communications skills to multiple audiences, and senior management personnel.



·        Experience with operation of PLC (Programmable Logic Control) machines.

·        Working knowledge of methods and procedures used in the manufacture and quality control of plastics fittings and components.

·        Experience managing 3rd party vendors, suppliers and technical development processes.
